Avoid encumbrance, it will get you killed. Remember to periodically sell those extra items you don't need, or stash them for future use. Backpacks bought from traders can be used as stashes.

It's best to familiarise yourself with sewing kits, gun oil and glue tubes - these items can help keep your gear pristine in the field for much longer. Full repair kits are more potent, but also rarer, heavier and costlier.
Backpacks can be bought or found and then used to create a custom stash. Stashes created by the player are never de-spawned nor are they ever looted by other stalkers. They are permanent until all items are removed.

Technicians always need new weapon parts to work. You can sell your spare parts to them for some quick cash, but don't expect to make a fortune out of it.
For a thousand roubles, you can pay a technician to use his workbench and vice to fix your own guns.
If you're respected enough among the members of a faction, you can convince some to join you in your expeditions. From there onwards you'll be responsible for them, so if something bad were to happen to them you'll be frowned upon.
